Storm Water Pollution & Water Quality

In 2004, Cooney, Watson & Associates, Inc. was chosen to develop an identity and graphic materials for the Stormwater Quality and Prevention Pollution Campaign, a multi-agency effort to improve the area’s stormwater quality. Our activities over the past four years have included:

Scoop

“Scoop the Poop,” a pet-waste education and public awareness campaign that includes a television spot, billboard graphics and bumper stickers. The campaign targeted dog owners who walk their dogs in parks, streets and along the Rio Grande. It was kicked off with a press conference involving a number of partners, and with collateral and educational materials made available at pet shelters, pet stores and animal control agencies.

xDevelopment of a Storm Water Team logo and an educational rack card. This logo will obviously need to be updated with the names of the new team partners – Southern Sandoval County Arroyo Flood Control Authority and the Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District, but we believe this can be accomplished easily.

In 2008, we added a new character, actually a “Spokes-Duck” named Rio, to the Storm Water Team and produced an additional television spot and radio spot with basic tips businesses and consumers can use to prevent storm water pollution. Several ideas we have that may be used in the future include:

1) An educational video following a string of rubber ducks through the storm water system to educate children and adults on what it is, how it works, why it’s important and how they can avoid actions that pollute the system; and 2) rubber ducks that could be customized with Rio’s distinctive hat and bolo tie and used in conjunction with school educational programs.

In addition, we developed a website for the Team (www.keeptheriogrand.org) with information on storm water pollution prevention for children, residents, businesses and professionals, as well as fun and interactive games, FAQs and more. We would hope to add more educational and interactive materials to this website if awarded the contract as Storm Water Quality Education Coordinator.

Several ideas we are implementing in 2009 - 2010 include:

1) An educational video on what our stormwater system is, how it works, why it’s important and how individuals can avoid actions that pollute the system

2) A full-size exhibit with a map of the area’s stormwater system

3) Innovative educational programs to reach 4th and 5th graders
