Keeping Kids Healthy in School
Hand Washing Curriculum for New Mexico School Nurses and Health
Education Teachers
New Mexico Department of Health
As an extension of Appropriate Antibiotic Use campaign, CWA was
asked to create a curriculum that school nurses and health education
teachers could use in the classroom to teach the importance of
washing hands.
The curriculum was designed for grades kindergarten through high
school with an emphasis on kindergarten through mid-school. It
was intended to teach why hand washing is important and when it
is necessary to wash hands. Additionally, there were exercises
built into the curriculum so students could involve family members
in the learning process and bring the lessons home.
The presentation at the school nurse symposium met with positive
reviews. More than 1,500 booklets were printed and 2 were
sent to every public and charter school in New Mexico. Each booklet
contained the curriculum, a DVD with all the materials in the booklet
for easy duplication, and 2 full-color posters (English and Spanish).
Results
- As a result of its innovative campaign, New Mexico received
the full three-year project funding possible from the CDC and
was featured as an authorized alternative campaign for states
serving Native American populations
- Anecdotal feedback from physicians’ offices indicated
that there was increased understanding of when to use antibiotics
among parents
- Follow-up activities with schools indicated the hand washing
curriculum was well-received among schoolchildren whose primary
language was Spanish as well as English
